First Aid Standards BS8599

BS8599-1:2001

The Health & Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981, amended in July 1990, and again in March 1997, outline a range of advice to employers for the provision of first aid within the workplace. They state that - "Empoyers should decide what to include in the First Aid Container from information gathered during their assesment of First Aid needs" First Aid provision at work will therefore largely depend on the type of work being carried out, location of workforce and size of site.

However, over the past decade, the requirement of the contents of a first aid kit has evolved and this has been recognised by the British Healthcare Trade Association who has worked, aanlysed, and developed a solution that is fit purpose in today's workplace environment. This is laid out in the new standard BS8599-1:2001(as per the table below).

It is anticipated that the HSE will change its Code of Practice and guidance to recommend the new BS8599 standard kit content as the recommended content for employers, replacing the kit contents set out in 1997, however this doesn't deem the HSE Compliant first aid kits unsuitable; it's just that HSE recommend the BS8599 kits, and the choice is ultimately up to you, the customer.
