Sustainability & Recycling

Sustainability & Recycling Policy

Tower Supplies is committed to protecting and enhancing local and global environments and ensuring that activities are carried out in a sustainable way.

To meet our policy aim, we endeavour to:

Be aware of all new environmental legislation and regulations and comply with all environmental legislation and regulations.
We will minimise energy use and its associated CO2 emissions and maximize the use of renewable energy sources where possible.
We will minimise the generation of waste, maximise the re-use of materials and products, maximise the use of recycled materials and products, and maximise the recycling of materials and products.
We will minimize raw material consumption and maximise the use of material from renewable sources. We will minimise  polluting emissions to air, land and water, and the use of polluting forms of transport.
We will assess the environmental impacts of all working practices and product manufacture and the whole life environmental performance of all purchases.
We will maximise the use of local products and local workforce. We will minimise the use of water.

To further the aims of this policy, we will:

Provide adequate training for all staff.
We will assess the environmental performance of all suppliers and develop a set of environmental targets and action plans.
We will review this environmental policy and its action plans periodically with a view to continuous improvement.

Examples of how Tower Supplies is committed to sustainability and actively implementing its Sustainability Policy:

a) Material Selection

Tower requests all manufacturers of clothing to provide evidence of WRAP certification which provides evidence that cotton is supplied from sustainable sources. In addition, Tower asks suppliers not to individually wrap and pack garments but instead to bulk pack items to reduce the use of packaging (particularly plastic wrapping).

All paper products provided by Tower to customers (e.g. paper towels, tissues, toilet paper) and used internally (e.g. printer and photocopier paper) are from sustainable sources or made from recycled materials. Additionally, Tower encourages customers to use dispensers that reduce waste by controlling the amount of paper towel or tissue dispensed (e.g. the SmartOne system provided by Tower Supplies).

As a distributor, Tower uses a large number of wooden pallets and deliberately deals with a supplier that sources wood from responsible and sustainable timber farms, and that actively encourages the repair, reuse and recycling of pallets.

b) Energy Efficiency Measures

The main use of energy by Tower is for lighting, copiers and IT equipment within the offices. To reduce the amount of energy used and prevent energy being wasted, staff are constantly reminded to switch if lights when rooms are not in use (reminder notices are posted in relevant places on walls, doors and notice boards).

All equipment is set to ‘sleep’ or ‘hibernate’ when not used for a short period of time.

Tower runs a small fleet of delivery vans. These are regularly serviced and updated to ensure they run as efficiently as possible.

c) Air Pollution & Climate

Within the warehouse and distribution facilities, for loading, unloading and material movements, electric forklifts are used rather than petrol or diesel in order to reduce noise and exhaust emissions.

Tower endeavours to ensure that all fleet vehicles have the lowest possible emissions through regular vehicle checks and servicing, driver training and seeking to use low emission vehicles.

The policy of Tower is to employ local staff. The majority of employees are from the local area and are near enough to walk or cycle to and from work.

d) Waste

Tower Supplies operates a controlled waste recycling programme. All waste is sorted into recyclable, cardboard and general waste categories. There are various facilities within the offices and warehouse to enable this. For example, within the office building there are separate waste bins for paper and non-paper waste to provide for separation and easier disposal of waste.

Staff are encourage not to print unnecessarily (e.g. all e-mail messages carry a signature reminding readers only to print if necessary), to print on both sides (the main copiers and printers have duplex printing functions) and, where possible, to reuse paper.

Within warehouse and distribution operations, Tower aims to reuse all packaging materials received from suppliers when redistributing goods to avoid unnecessary waste and repacking of goods.

There is regular monitoring of the waste recycling operator used by the business to ensure waste is collected at suitable frequencies and that as much as possible is sent for recycling.
