Head Protection

Recent legislation means that protective headgear is now mandatory in every industry where there is a risk of falling objects. If no protection is provided or if it is poorly fitted or of inadequate quality, an accident involving a worker’s head can be devastating. This however can be easily prevented with the right equipment. Lightweight and built for uncompromising comfort, our range provides unbeatable protection fro t of our Scott International range are also developed to be worn alongside glasses and ear defenders, meaning no compromises on safety have to be made. Available in a variety of peak sizes to facilitate those who work looking upwards, our helmets come with the Tower seal of approval and CE tested quality, so you can rest assured knowing your safety is our priority.

In the average workplace encountering hazards that may require head protection is far more common that it may seem. Protection may be needed if there is any danger of the following: falling objects, slips and trips, protruding objects, flying matter, toxic fumes, excessive noise levels, obstructed vision, chemical splashes, inadequate lighting and the long hair of colleagues. Although it may seem unlikely and a tad excessive, all of the above either directly or indirectly cause thousands of head injuries every year. The lower risk hazards often compromise worker safety, leading to exposure to further risks, trips, slips and falls.

When choosing the correct head protection, it’s paramount you consider the differences between the ranges we stock in order to gauge your specific needs. All helmets, specialist head protection and bump caps provide a variation in protection performance depending on seven factors. These factors are; weight, helmet cradle, sweatband, ventilation, peak size, the retro reflective quality of the surface and badging ability.

The weight of a helmet can depend on the levels of protection it provides, whether it is formed from a UV stabilised high density polyethylene or ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) or the quality and amount of internal components. Although some heavier helmets promise stronger levels of resistance and a more secure fastening, for long periods of use it can be found to be less comfortable than the lighter weight styles.

The helmet cradle often comes in four, six and eight point variations, depending on the weight and security requirements of the head protection. The higher the number of points on the cradle, the more comfortable and better it will perform when adjusted to your head size. The material the cradle is formed from also effects comfort and ease of donning, some feature a secure polyethylene cradle, whilst others are made from a sweat wicking Terylene textile webbing. Choice is largely to do with personal preference, but workers in particular climates will find some cradles more accommodating to extremely hot or cold conditions.

A sweatband is a feature found in several styles and is ideal for those who need to stay protected for extended periods of time. Not only does the option of a sweatband release pressure from the helmet, but also help the wearer remain cool and comfortable in changing climates. Helmet ventilation also helps keep the wearer cool, however as a feature is unsuitable for every person and every working environment. For general work, where comfort is a priority, a ventilated helmet helps maintain a cool temperature. However for welding and environments where there is likely to be metal splash, chemical spray or projectile chippings then it’s advisable to opt for non-ventilated helmet for enhanced and uncompromised safety.
